The observance of National Kebaya Day, officially designated by the Government every 25 July, marks a significant milestone in preserving one of Indonesia’s most treasured cultural symbols. More than a traditional garment, the kebaya represents elegance, identity, and the rich cultural diversity of the Indonesian people. The annual commemoration encourages Indonesians to embrace and celebrate their cultural roots while passing this heritage on to future generations.
Demonstrating its commitment to cultural preservation, Alumni SMA Jakarta Bersatu (ASJB) actively participated in the “Gebyar Kebaya di SCBD” celebration held on Sunday, 26 July 2026, at SCBD Land, Jakarta. The event was organized through a collaboration between Komunitas Kebaya Menari, Perempuan Berkebaya Indonesia Jakarta Chapter (PBIJ), and PEWIBI, bringing together communities that share a common mission of promoting Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
ASJB Chairwoman RA Jeni Suryanti expressed her strong support for the participation of ASJB members, emphasizing that preserving culture is an integral part of strengthening national identity and social unity. In a separate statement, she conveyed her appreciation to members who attended the event, particularly representatives from the East Jakarta, Bekasi, Central Jakarta, and South Jakarta regional chapters. Also joining the celebration were Poppy, Head of ASJB’s Program Division, and Ismutia, a member of the ASJB Supervisory Board.
According to Kristin DS from ASJB Central Jakarta, the event attracted enthusiastic participation from the public and created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the day. Citing Yanti Moeljono, Chairwoman of Komunitas Kebaya Menari and the event’s organizing committee, the program aimed to encourage women—especially those living in Jakarta—to proudly wear the kebaya in their daily lives while introducing Indonesia’s traditional attire through dance performances both nationally and internationally. She emphasized that the kebaya is an enduring symbol of Indonesian womanhood and should continue to be preserved for generations to come.
Visitors enjoyed a diverse lineup of cultural activities, including traditional Indonesian dance performances, an educational talk show on the history and significance of the kebaya, and a fashion parade featuring creations from leading kebaya designers showcasing the evolution of this iconic attire. The celebration concluded on a joyful note with a community karaoke session and group dancing, where participants dressed in colorful kebayas celebrated Indonesia’s cultural richness together.
Representing ASJB East Jakarta, Chairwoman Susi shared her reflections on the occasion:
“The kebaya and traditional Indonesian dances are invaluable cultural treasures that must be preserved. On the occasion of the third National Kebaya Day celebration, I, together with the board and members of ASJB East Jakarta, am proud to have participated directly in this meaningful event.”
She also expressed hope that ASJB would continue expanding its cultural initiatives.
“We hope ASJB will organize more programs that promote Indonesian arts and culture for members across all regional chapters as well as the wider community, especially for children and young people who will carry our cultural heritage into the future.”
